On March 1, 2021, Twitter announced that the company will “begin applying labels to Tweets that may contain misleading information about COVID-19 vaccines”. The company will also continue to remove “misleading information” about COVID-19.
In the statement, Twitter says that since the introduction of its COVID-19 posting guidelines, the company has removed more than 8,400 Tweets and “challenged 11.5 million accounts worldwide”.
In the statement, Twitter did not specify what kind of information would be deemed “misinformation”. Twitter did say that the policy will be enforced by human fact-checkers.
Twitter also announced that they will be introducing a strike system “that determines when further enforcement action is necessary.”
